I always ask what kind of content you all want to read so I can be sure I’m serving you in the best way possible. I got a lot of comments saying budget travel is something you want to read more about 🙂 Today’s post has some tips for saving money while you’re traveling.
- You know I have to talk about the food! We try to eat at take away places for at least a meal or two a day. Whether it’s a small breakfast, or a take away lunch, we tend to save our money for nicer dinners. Plus we pack some snacks with us in our checked bag to help get us to dinner.
- As a sub point to the food and restaurants, try to find places off the beaten path. Don’t eat in the touristy areas. This applies to coffee shops too! In Paris, we went to a very popular place [now don’t get me wrong, it was a super cute cafe and on a beautiful street], but I paid 9 euros for a cappuccino! Ask your concierge or the host at your Airbnb for suggestions on local places.
- Take public transportation. A lot of the bigger cities have great public transportation. Don’t be afraid to use it. Taxis will really add up, especially if you’re stuck in that awful city traffic. If you’re not able, or intimidated by public transportation, we have found Uber to be a great alternative to taxis.
- Check out the free museum days/free activities. Do your research before your trip. Some places have a few museums that are free, or they have a day of the week that is free entry. Parks or public gardens are always a great place to visit that don’t cost anything.
- Save your pennies before you go and take cash. We try to save up some cash to take with us before a big trip. We return bottles, sell clothes etc., and all that money goes in a special jar to take with us. We use that for the few activities we do want to pay for, and souvenirs if we want. It helps us not charge a ton on our credit cards and keeps us more aware of what we’re spending.
- Don’t forget to get lost in the city. Walking around and exploring is always free and will probably be one of your favorite times of your trip.
Hope some of these help as you’re planning your vacation. Tell me, where are you headed?
