tips for engagement photos

January 11, 2017

Now that engagement season is in full swing, the bookings are rolling in. I thought I would write a post to help you lovely engaged folks as you prepare for your photo session. I always recommend getting engagement photos done. It’s a chance to have photos of the two of you in a less formal setting, plus it gives you and the photographer a chance to get to know each other. It shows you how the photographer works, and that way you’re more comfortable on your wedding day. So here are my 5 tips for getting engagement photos done.

  1. If you’re able, try and schedule your hair and makeup trials the day you’re getting photos done. It gives you a chance to see what your stylists will do for your wedding, gets you comfortable with them, plus makes you feel all fancy for your photos 🙂
  2. Neutral colors photograph very well. Colors like navy, grey and blush are winners in my book. Try to avoid crazy patterns if possible.
  3. Pick places that mean something to you. A lot of my favorite engagement sessions are places that are special to the couple. Spots they had their first date in, cities they love exploring or even parks they’ve walked in. If there’s not one meaningful place, do something that means a lot to you both. A coffee place because you always get coffee together, a park because you love going on walks etc. You get the idea.
  4. Most photographers, myself included, allow two outfit changes. Take advantage of this! My suggestion to couples is to do one casual outfit and one fancy [who doesn’t want the chance to dress up ;)]. It gives you more options in photos!
  5. Last but not least, be yourselves in front of the camera. For me, I want these photos to highlight your love story. I don’t want them to be formal posed photos you can get at a standard studio. These photos are to be passed down to your family. I want your children and your children’s children to see right away the amount of love you have for one another.
