Tips for Scotland

August 1, 2018

As I was thinking through topics for upcoming travel posts, I wanted to revisit Scotland since I realized I have a few more tips for you! It’s such a great country and if it isn’t on your bucket list, it absolutely should be!

-Be sure to pack some really comfy shoes, maybe even some hiking shoes depending on where in Scotland you’re venturing. There is so much lush, green areas and places to hike that you want to be sure you brought the right walking/hiking shoes!

-Scotland is a place you definitely want to wear layers. It can go from sunny to rainy, from cold to warm [notice I didn’t say hot lol] fairly quickly. I know you all check the weather for your destination as you’re packing, but for Scotland, be sure to throw in a few extra layers, and a raincoat for sure!

-Scotland is pretty pricey, especially in the bigger cities, so do your research before you go, or better yet, ask some locals what some great FREE or low cost attractions are. Check out the museums for free days, take beautiful hikes, grab food from a local organic market [those are surprisingly not too expensive] and have a picnic in a park, and just get lost in the city you’re in.

-Try exploring outside the big cities. We really loved Edinburgh and can’t wait to get back there someday soon, but places like St. Andrews, the Highlands or the Isle of Skye are gorgeous. You don’t want to miss those!

-Don’t forget they drive on the left side of the road in Scotland. It’s helpful to know if you’re going to rent a car [which I do recommend to explore the highlands/Isle of Skye], but it’s also good to know when you’re walking! It makes a difference when you’re trying to cross the streets!

-Breakfast consists of all kinds of foods and can be pretty large portions. Not only is it just eggs and bacon, but your breakfast platter will include some sort of veg, potatoes, a form of bread and a meat. I was with my husband, sister-in- law and 2 nieces and we probably only needed 2 plates instead of all ordering our own separate plate.

*An extra tip: if you don’t like crowds, avoid places like Loch Ness town, the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and a lot of the touristy restaurants in Portree.

Scotland is a gorgeous country. Enjoy being outside and exploring 🙂
